Good Dog Fido

You had to know a fur face was involved in the takedown of Osama bin Laden. Apparently, at least one of the 80 or so member team that removed scumbag #1 from face of the earth was quadrupedal ...

Little is known about what may be the nation’s most courageous dog. Even its breed is the subject of great interest, although it was most likely a German shepherd or a Belgian Malinois, military sources say. But its use in the raid reflects the military’s growing dependence on dogs in wars in whichimprovised explosive devices have caused two-thirds of all casualties. Dogs have proved far better than people or machines at quickly finding bombs.

Lots of speculation in the piece about why fur face might have been invited to participate. Me? My guess is that it had less to do with all of the technical skills dogs can learn and more to do with the notion that a well trained hound with an attitude can be most intimidating, especially to population that stereotypically have an aversion to "man's best friend."

My fervent hope is that the unnamed fido got a kiss on the nose and a tummy rub for a job well done ... and a Milk-Bone.
